Geometry
2015-2016
Mrs. Jessica Heydon
Hours: I will try to be in my room every morning by 7:45 am. When I am not coaching, I will be available after school until 4:00 pm. My prep periods are 5th and 6th periods. Other times can be arranged also. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to seek help when needed. Math is a subject that builds on itself so it is important to get help early to understand the subject matter. Remember, no question is a stupid question. If you do not know, ASK!!
Classroom Rules:
1. Be Respectful
Ø Respect your classmates and teacher at all times. This includes listening quietly while others are talking.
Ø Respect the property of the school and others.
Ø Respect yourself.
2. Be Responsible
Ø Come to class prepared: notebook, folder, pen/pencil, calculator, book, etc.
o If you do not bring one of these items, you will be sent to your locker to get it and will also be charged a tardy. Be responsible!
Ø Have your assignment done prior to coming to class.
Ø Be in your seat and ready to learn by the time the bell rings.
3. Do Your Own Work
4. Have FUN!!
5. The bell does not dismiss you, I do.
Grading: 80% Tests/Quizzes
10% Homework & Homework Quizzes
10% Projects/Activities
Homework:
Most homework will be assigned via your computers. MathXL is the program we will use. I allow two days to complete assignments to accommodate for those of you who do not have Internet at home and/or had issues with a connection. I do NOT recommend abusing these two days as you will find yourself falling behind.
Any worksheets I assign will be worth 5 completion points. If it appears you copied answers down and/or did not show work to problems that require it, you will NOT receive the full 5 points, if any.
Homework quizzes will be given also. These may or may not be announced. Problems will be very similar, if not the exact same, as your homework problems. There should be no surprises on these quizzes if you have been doing your homework.
Quizzes/Tests: Quizzes and tests are to be completed using a pencil. Quizzes will be announced or unannounced.
Class Participation: Students are expected to contribute to class discussions each day. No points will be assigned for doing so, but if your grade is borderline, class participation may raise your grade. (For example, if you had an 79.8% and participated regularly you may receive a B instead of a C)
Extra Credit: Extra credit is offered occasionally on quizzes/tests.
Leaving the Classroom: If you want to leave the classroom for whatever reason, you must sign out and get permission first. If you start to abuse this, I will not let you leave the classroom.
Tardiness: Each person is allowed two “free” tardies per semester. Each tardy after that will result in a 30-minute detention to be served that day or next morning.
Cheating: Cheating will not be tolerated! The school handbook’s consequences will be used.
Absence: If you know you are going to be absent make sure to notify me as soon as you can so that you can be given the assignment for the day. If you are not able to notify me in advance, make sure to notify me as soon as possible so I can get you your assignment(s). All assignments missed will be due no later than two times the number of days absent. My website is a good place to get any missing assignments also.
*Note: Make sure to have the assignment that was due the day of the absence completed, as it will be due the day you return.
Classroom Procedures & Expectations:
a. Sharpening Pencils—do at a convenient time—NOT while I am teaching
b. NO throwing pencils/pens—possible detention time
c. NO ‘shooting’ recyclables and/or paper—get up and throw away
d. Borrowing & Collateral—you must use a pencil on quizzes/tests. If you do not have one, you may borrow one of mine for something of yours. When I get my pencil back, you get whatever you gave me back.
e. Hats—If you wear them, you can expect them to become mine and I will give them back when I choose to.
f. Calculators—bring your own…not guaranteed one from me—first come, first serve—NO swapping during quizzes/tests. If you borrow from me, you need to give me some collateral of yours.
g. Gum and “candy”—only if they’re not distractions. Candy refers to jolly ranchers or other like that where you just suck on it (no sticks)
h. NO drinks except water—I will throw anything other than water away
i. NO food—I will throw it away
j. Assignment board will always have the assignments on it and will let you know of quizzes/tests for the week
k. Use class time wisely—many assignments can be completed in class if you work during class
l. Cell phones/devices—when you enter my classroom you have the choice to keep it or put it in the box. If you choose to keep it and I catch you using it, I will confiscate it for the remainder of the day. If it happens again, I will confiscate it and give it back to your parent. Cell phones and other devices distract from your learning!
m. Retakes—I allow two retakes per quarter. No retake will be given without coming in to get extra help on the mistakes that were made on the original quiz/test.
I want to help and see you be successful, but I can’t do it for you!
